During the busy holiday season the end of the A48 towards Carmarthen can become quite slow moving as everyone tries to filter onto the roundabout on the edge of town. If you think it might be busy you can avoid this bottleneck by taking the following diversion;
The M4 ends at Pont Abraham and you take the A48 to Carmarthen.
After 4 miles you reach Cross Hands and follow signs for A48 to Haverfordwest, Fishguard, St Clears, Tenby etc etc
If the traffic is fairly busy on the next stretch then do the following!
Look out for signs for National Botanic Gardens of Wales after about 4 miles
After about another 3 miles look out for a Texaco petrol station on the right
Soon after the petrol station there is a right turn at the top of Nantycaws hill which I think is signposted to Llangunnor and Police Headquarters. You’ll have to look out and get into the right lane to turn and then beware because people treat the road like a motorway i.e. take no chances crossing!!!
Follow the Llangunnor road all the way to the roundabout in Carmarthen (about 3 miles) where you’ll see PC world and Currys. Turn left.
At the next roundabout (McDonalds and Morrisons are visible here) turn right (3rd exit) signposted A40 Haverfordwest, St Clears, Tenby, Fishguard etc.
At the next roundabout turn left with B&Q on your left and then our other instructions take over.
If you miss the turning don’t worry the queue won’t be too bad after 3 pm.
